Books about Warm Weather Fun
August 5, 2010
These stories and warm weather activities will really heat up your day! They focus on playing outdoors, cooling off in the water, and visiting relatives. Vivid illustrations show children playing in city and country settings. But no matter where they live or travel to, children can relate to these stories.
The Relatives Came, by Cynthia Rylant. Illus. by Stephen Gammell. [1985] 2001.
Miranda’s Beach Day, by Holly Keller. 2009.
Note similarities and differences. Using these books as a starting point, discuss with your child how she thinks summer looks in different places. What is summer like in the city, in the country, at the beach, in the forest? After talking about the differences, ask her to find similarities among the locations. With a younger child, talk about what summer looks like where you live—“We have a sprinkler at the park we go to when it’s hot,” “We visit grandma at the lake.” Map it out. On a local or U.S. map, mark where you will be enjoying your next family adventure. Is it a short trip to a neighboring town, a walk to the park, or an airplane flight across the country? For the local map, make icons or special markers for the types of places you will visit—nature preserves, museums, parks, swimming pools, a cousin’s house. For a U.S. map, talk about where your family will travel and what mode of transportation you will use. Create a warm weather scene. Find inspiration talking about the book’s illustrations. Then join your child in making her own warm weather scene using paint or collage. Pictures can show the city, the beach, the mountains, or any other location. Include favorite warm weather activities, seasonal foods, or special visitors.
